I have had my Kindle for almost a year now. When I first got it, I thought that I would use it like I did my Nook 70 percent Dead Tree Books and 30 percent on my Kindle. With my Nook, I mostly read e-galleys.
However, as I look back at my stats for this year, I have found that almost all of my reading has been digital this year. I was shocked as I was one of the last of my friends to jump on the whole e-book technology bandwagon. After I had looked back at my stats, I started thinking about WHY this happened this year.
The main reason was that I had a HUGE library fine that I couldn’t/didn’t make an effort to pay, so I subscribed to Scribed. I also used the e-library in KY that I had access too when I still lived here. Between the two I felt most of the year that I was satisfied with what I had to read.
Toward the end of the year though I started noticing that I was missing going to the library. It was my happy place. Whenever I was feeling sad or burnt out or whatever, I would go and browse, and I always felt better. It worked better than any anti-depressant for me. I can remember feeling like crap battling my depression then dragging myself to the library and almost instantly feeling better.
Another the thing is that I got REALLY hooked on reading comics and Graphic Noves this year, and I hate reading them on my Kindle. I feel like to get the full experience I need to get the real comics so that everything is clear. I have tried all the technology to experience comics on a Kindle and..just no. I want the big ass trade volumes to read. The problem is that lack the big ass trade money for all the comics that I want to read. I was stunned when I realized just how much they are. I found out that my library in Kent Ohio has ALL the comics. If they don’t have it, then they can get it for you. I have asked them to find obscure books before, and they haven’t failed me yet.
I like obscure hard to find books. Like there is one book that Spock from Star Treck wrote about Ancient Religions that I want to read, and it is like 200 on Amazon. I am guessing Star Treck pays really well if Spock thinks people is going to buy his book at that price but I a lowly human writer do not have that kind of money. I looked, and OhioLink has it. I looked for other rare books, and I found them on OhioLink. God bless the Ohio Library system.
I thought about it, and I realized that by taking all the above into account that the perfect present for me would be to pay off my library fine and this time don’t lose an ILL Book and when I have 40 books checked out (the limit is 75) do not accumulate late fees. Seriously Y’all I am putting all those suckers due dates on my calendar and unless it is a zombie rising or something I am either getting those books back to the library and actually renewing them.
I looked, and they have an outstanding selection of e-books with the Ohio Library system. I still love the convince of being able to take my Kindle in my purse and pulling it out to read whenever. I also love the fact that as long as I have Wi-FI I can browse the e-Library and get books. Also when I go on trips or travel nothing can beat the convince of a Kindle or an e-library.
I will probably read mostly from my kindle again this year. I know it won’t be like 98 percent, though. I have canceled my subscription to Scribed, and if it is not on the e-library list or has a gazillion of people in line ahead of me, I will just get a Dead Tree Book from the Library. It will be interesting to see what my stats are at the end of the year is in 2016.
