When the first e readers started coming out I thought I would never use one. I prefered the feel of real books in my hand. As they slowly gained in popularity I started having second thoughts. It wasn’t until the nook simple touch came out that I decided I wanted one. The main reason is that you can borrow library books in epub form (although now you can on a kindle also). I wanted an eReader that was simply for reading without being distracted by all the social media sites.
At first it felt weird. It took me time to get used to it. I was torn by wanting to read a “real” book and wanting the ease of using the Nook. I a way I felt I was being disloyal to the printed word. For across centuries the book has signified the educated mind. The intellectuals would gather together and discussed all of the ideas contained in books. How could e reading compare to that?
I soon found that I read faster on an eReader than I did with real books. And the biggest advantage was that my Nook could hold thousands of books so I would never again be caught somewhere having finished my book and had to while away the time til I could go back home and get a new one. I would always have something to read at my finger tips.
Slowly as more and more libraries began to build their online book base I started to prefer the Nook. Now when I want a book I check to see if it is online before I request it from the library.
This is not to say I have given up the printed page completely. I still get real books from the library. Mostly new ones that are not online yet. I do like to keep up with the newest novels so that is the best choice.
I now divide my time between the two but if I am going somewhere it is the nook I put into my purse and read. The big bulky books are for home reading only.
What about you? Have you made the switch to eReaders or do you still use Dead Tree Books?
I got a Nook simple touch about a year ago and used it to read a few very long classics. I considered getting the newer version with the glow light, but ended up receiving a kindle paperwhite for Christmas. The big advantage is that I can read in bed without a bright book light (my husband loves that!), but I am also finding the amazon website easier and offering more options than B&N. I will be doing MUCH more e-reading now!
