The first book in Molly Harper's uproariously funny, sinfully sexy new Mystic Bayou series
Anthropologist Jillian Ramsay's career has taken a turn south.
Concerned that technology is about to chase mythological creatures out into the open (how long can Sasquatch stay hidden from Google maps?), the League for Interspecies Cooperation is sending Jillian to Louisiana on a fact-finding mission. While the League hopes to hold on to secrecy for a little bit longer, they're preparing for the worst in terms of human reactions. They need a plan, so they look to Mystic Bayou, a tiny town hidden in the swamp where humans and supernatural residents have been living in harmony for generations. Mermaids and gator shifters swim in the bayou. Spirit bottles light the front porches after twilight. Dragons light the fires under crayfish pots.
Jillian's first assignment for the League could be her last. Mystic Bayou is wary of outsiders, and she has difficulty getting locals to talk to her. And she can't get the gruff town sheriff, Bael Boone, off of her back or out of her mind. Bael is the finest male specimen she's seen in a long time, even though he might not be human. Soon their flirtation is hotter than a dragon's breath, which Bael just might turn out to be...
This book is based on the Audible Original audiobook.
Do you want to hear something funny? When one of my best friends told me about this book and series I thought that dragon was code for something else. Then when I listened to the audiobook and found out that dragon wasn’t exactly a code but rather something else ( I don’t want to give away spoilers) my mouth hit the floor. I am thankful for my Audible Escape sub because I went and downloaded the whole series of audiobooks. I blew through them in record time. They were THAT good.
I always wondered when hearing people would mean when they said that the narration brought the story to life. After hearing the whole Mystic Bayou series I now know what they meant. when I see people say that a certain narrator puts that extra spark into the story that makes even more enjoyable to listen to. Imagine my surprise when I heard the narrators in this book had Southern Accents! I never knew how much a narrator who can use accents can help bring the story to life until I Listened to How To date Your Dragon. I feel that this book which is the only genre of books that I have listened to where Audio made the people and setting so real that you almost wish you could help them with all of their problems.
At least that is how I felt.
I am not proud of this but once thought that romance novels were nothing but trash and stayed far far away. Then I discovered that while I may dislike TRADITIONAL romance novels if you throw in a zombie or some such I am the first one to want my grabby hands on a copy.
It has been AGES since I read this kind of romance. Did I devour all of the True Blood or whatever but to actively seek out a romance between shapeshifters and the like? NOPE! I am glad that I took a “risk” such as this and found a whole new author to love. I am so glad that she has a backlist of stuff form to read. There nothing more exciting to discover such an author. I feel that the best explanation for why I have been gushing over this book is because the narration was so perfect. I mean yeah, I am sure that the book alone is outstanding but the narration was perfect!
Too funny about the code. Nope it’s not like Netflix and Chill, Bwahaha. I totally get liking the romance mixed within other genres. I am not a huge straight-up contemporary romance fan. I like mixing other genres or zombies in!
